Note: Ghiyath ud din Iwad, appointed governor of Bengal in AH 1213 under the Delhi Sultanate, declared himself Sultan of Bengal in 1219, as evidenced by a rare silver tanka. His reign, however, was brief; by AH 1227, Iltutmish of Delhi deposed and executed him. During 620-621 AH, Iwad’s growing power in Bengal and Bihar raised concerns for Iltutmish, prompting a decisive eastern expedition in 622 AH that temporarily subdued Iwad. Although Iwad regained authority in Bihar shortly after, he ultimately fell in battle against Iltutmish’s son, Mahmud.
