Akbar (AH 963-1014 /1556-1605 AD), Ujjain Mint, Gold Square Heavy Mohur, AH 988, Obv: Arabic legend&nbsp;The Kalima Shahada within a square &amp; four Caliphs' name &amp; Hijri year 988 in the margin, Rev:&nbsp;Persian legend "Jalal-ud din Muhammad Akbar Badshah Ghazi" &amp; khuld allahu ta’ala mulkahu at the top &amp; "zarb Ujjain" completely visible at the bottom, 12.13g, 18.5 x 18.5mm (Unreported), sharp strike, uncirculated, Exceedingly Rare.1987-855

Note : Akbar was an imperialist, he frankly declared and desired to pursue the place of extension of his empire as the necessity for the security of his territories.&nbsp;He also expressed&nbsp;“A monarch should be ever intent on conquest, otherwise his enemies rise in arms against him.”&nbsp;He, therefore, engaged himself in wars of conquest and largely succeeded.&nbsp; T he first conquest of Akbar was that of&nbsp;Malwa in the year 1561 AD&nbsp;which was independent sultanate ruled by&nbsp;Baz Bahadur, Baz was fond of fine arts, particularly of dance and music. He was neglectful towards the affairs of the state and kept himself engrossed in romance. Akbar took advantage of this, he despatched Adam Khan with Mughal Army to conquer Malwa and they faced Baz Bahadur 20 miles ahead of his capital Sarangpur where Baz was defeated and fled away. Adam Khan kept most of the captured treasure to himself which dissatisfied Akbar who went in person to Sarangpur, later Khan pleaded mercy and was forgiven by Akbar.&nbsp; In the year 1562 AD Baz Bahadur took help of some rulers of Southern India and attacked Malwa, this time Mughals were defeated and Baz was successful to recapture Malwa. Unfortunately Baz Bahadur’s success remained short-lived as Akbar sent Abdulla Khan Uzbeg to recapture Malwa, Mughals succeeded in recovering Malwa and Baz again fled away. Abdulla was made the governor. In 1568 AD Malwa became the Subah of Mughal Empire (Imperial Province). It was one of the original 12 Subah of the Mughal Empire having its&nbsp;capital at Ujjain, this Subah comprised of 12 Sarkars (districts) : Ujjain, Chanderi, Raisen, Garha Mandla, Sarangpur, Bijagarh, Mandu, Handia, Nandurbar, Mandsaur, Gagron and Kotri-Parava. T his coin is quite interesting as it is the only known example so far for this type, the obverse is totally die identical of those Mohurs struck at Ahmadabad (vide KM 112.5) with the same AH 988, paired with the reverse of Zarb Ujjain die. It has to be noted that the stylization of the reverse is comparatively similar to those of silver rupee listed vide KM 82.7 except the inclusion of Muslim year AH for the gold mohur die. It is possible that the die master would have either copied the obverse as is of Ahmadabad or the same die from Ahmadabad should have brought in to Ujjain and only the reverse die were prepared locally at Ujjain omitting out the AH year (as it is already on the obverse) which is similar to the reverse of silver rupee die from this mint.&nbsp;&nbsp;An extremely important rarity in Akbar’s coinage.
