Coins and Currency Systems in South India c. AD 225-1300 is a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the coinage of the post-Satavahana and pre-Vijayanagara period. The author has studied and utilized all the published material on the subject and has also thoroughly examined several collections of coins with a view to ascertaining afresh the problems of chronology and dynastic affiliations of coins. The work also has a corpus of coins which describes and gives detailed references to over 400 coin-types and varieties. In the two chapters on the currency system of south India, Chattopadhyaya has not only drawn upon numismatic material but also on a variety of other sources, including epigraphy and literary. He has discussed the significance of various coin series including the Roman and the Chinese, which have been found from a number of sites in south India, and has discussed their significance in the context of currency system. An added feature of this work is the discussion focusing on the problem of adjustment of exchange value between different types of coins in circulation.&nbsp;

However, we have yet to have final answers to some of the fundamental questions: when, where, and how was money shaped as coins or as pieces of stamped metal first introduced to human civilization? Its genesis in India is traced back to the sixth century bc: during the second urban revolution, when coins came to be manufactured here independently and indigenously. Analysing in depth an astonishing mass of numismatic and kindred data, published in different catalogues, archaeological reports, journals and elsewhere, this book investigates the evolution of ancient Indias money economy: in terms of its coinage, through six successive periods: janapada, Maurya, post-Maurya, Gupta, post-Gupta, and pre-medieval which, in their togetherness, span nearly two millennia. Covering the entire subcontinental sprawl, Dr. Jain considers the whole variety of coins: local, universal standard, and even foreign, with meticulous descriptions of coin types, symbols, legends, fabric and metrology. There is a great table of marks found on coins with the mints and types within mints that exhibit the marks. Within the catalogue itself is incredible information about the mint town and the coinage from those mints. Finally, there is an extensive bibliography, including references to history and lists of gazeteers, genealogies of the Marathas, Peshwas and Mughals, nomenclature found on the coins, an appendix of legends on coins, tips on dating coins. Because many of the coins are in the name of Mughal emperors, the sectionon nomenclature includes couplets and brief biographies of the Mughal emperors.</h1>
