&nbsp;Note: The beginning of Shahjahan’s reign saw a good deal of military activity. On his accession Shahjahan had appointed Khan Jahan Lodi, whose father had been an officer in Akbar’s army, Governor of Berar and Khandesh, with the responsibility of recovering territories in the Deccan that the Mughals had lost. Khan Jahan appeared reluctant to take on this assignment, so Shah Jahan sent him to Malwa instead.&nbsp;Later Khan Jahan was summoned to Shah Jahan’s court, but when he received what he considered to be a cool reception, he fled to take refuge with the Nizam Shah of Ahmadnagar.&nbsp;Shahjahan, worried that the Mughal position in the Deccan was under threat, led an army out of Agra in the winter of 1039 H (1630 AD) to invade Nizam Shah’s territories. When the Mughals inflicted a heavy defeat on him, Khan Jahan fled once more, but he was pursued and after a long chase was finally captured and killed.In 1045 (1636) Shah Jahan annexed the lands of Ahmadnagar, concluded a peace treaty with the rulers of Bijapur, and became protector of Golconda, which was obliged to pay tribute to him. After this Jahan’s son Aurangzeb was appointed viceroy and commander-in-chief of the Mughal forces in the Deccan. Shah Jahan then returned north to begin work on the construction of his new capital, Shahjahanabad at Delhi.&nbsp;&nbsp;This coin goes back to the ever-popular square in circle type, with the field legends contained in a delicate square with knot-like designs at each corner. Its dies are masterpieces of Mughal calligraphy, executed with the Superb refinement and elegance, showing that Shah Jahan employed highly skilled die-makers, even for coins from provincial mints.&nbsp;&nbsp;The fort and town of Ilahabad, or Allahabad, had been constructed by Akbar at the junction of the rivers Jumna and Ganges, and Shahjahan’s brother, Prince Khusraw, with his mother &amp; Sister were buried there.
