In 1924 AD, Bahawalpur was a princely state in southern Punjab under British India, ruled by the Abbasi (Daudputra) dynasty from the late 18th century until the Partition of India. The state maintained its own mint and issued distinctive coinage under British suzerainty.<o:p></o:p>Sadiq Muhammad Khan V, the 14th and final Nawab of Bahawalpur, had ascended the throne as a child and became a transformative ruler. He oversaw major developments in the state, including infrastructure, education, and cultural projects, while maintaining relations with the British administration.<o:p></o:p>One of the most significant events in Bahawalpur in 1924 was the establishment and inauguration of the Bahawalpur Central Library (Sadiq Reading Library), a landmark project reflecting the state’s commitment to education and culture.<o:p></o:p>This Gold Nazrana Double Ashrafi of Bahawalpur with King’s portrait was struck during the final years of princely autonomy, likely as a ceremonial presentation coin for this important occasion. It features regal portraiture, elegant Persian inscriptions, and heraldic symbolism, representing the sovereignty, piety, and dynastic authority of the Nawab in gold metal.<o:p></o:p>Fewer than five specimens are known, making this one of the rarest gold Double Mohurs issued by any Indian princely state.
