Note: This rupee was issued by the Bundela Rajput ruler of Orchha during the reign of Shah Alam II. Late Mughal zodiac rupees from the Orchha Nagar mint are known with similar obverse legends, and the calligraphy closely resembles rupees struck at Jhansi (Balwantnagar) under Awadh administration.<o:p></o:p>By Ry. 6 of Shah Alam II (1764–65), Jhansi came under Maratha control, and Maratha issues from Balwantnagar show a distinct change in style. Coins from the Orchha Nagar mint are otherwise only known for the single date combination AH 1177 / Ry. 6.<o:p></o:p>It is likely that mint craftsmen from Awadh moved to Orchha after the Marathas took Jhansi, producing this short-lived issue. The Maratha “pataka” symbol suggests a subordinate relationship with the Marathas, reflecting the political realities of the period.<o:p></o:p> &nbsp;.
