Bengal Sultanate, Daud Shah Kararani (AH 980-984/1572-1576 AD), Tanda Mint, Silver Rupee, AH 980, Three Chambers type, Obv: Arabic legend The Kalima Shahada within a square & four Caliphs' name in the margin, Rev: Arabic legend "Da'ud Shah Sulaiman Shah Kararani Khuld Allahu Mulkahu wa Sultanahu, zarb Tanda, 980 Hijri years" & Nagari legend "Sri Daud Shahi" in three chambers, 11.22g, 30.84mm, (Unpublished and Unrecorded), test mark, about very fine, Exceedingly Rare.

Note: During the 1572 period, trade and commerce activities were believed to be on the rise with the Arakan rulers. Because of the high-trade volumes and interchange of coins in trade, it is highly likely that Daud was influenced by coin minting types and issued this three-chamber type imitating the stylization of Sikandar Shah bin Zafar, an Arakanese ruler. Daud Shah was the only Kararani ruler who issued coins in his name.

The Kararanis brothers, Taj Khan and Sulaiman Khan were Afghans who held provincial governorships under the Suris. Taj Khan Karrani, a former official of Sher Shah Suri, assassinated the last ruler of the Muhammad shahi dynasty Ghiyat ud-din Shah of Bengal, and founded the Kararani dynasty in Bengal.

Sulaiman’s younger son, Daud Shah was raised to the throne after his brother’s death. He thought that he was strong enough to fight against the army of Akbar of Delhi and issued coins in his own name showing that he did not pay homage to Delhi. He fought a few battles against Akbar’s army and was defeated in the war of Rajmahal by Akbar's joint force of Khan-e-Jahan & Muzaffar Khan Turbati. He was captured & executed in the year AH 984 /CE 1576. He was the last independent Sultan of Bengal to issue coins in his own name. After his death, the tradition of independent sultans ceased & Bengal became part of the Mughal Empire as a subah under subahdars.
