Shah Shuja, the second son of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, briefly laid claim to the Mughal throne during the 1650s, amid a fierce power struggle with his brothers. Serving as Governor of Bengal, Shuja declared himself Emperor, issued his own coinage, and had the Khutba recited in his name in cities like Patna and Akbarnagar. His reign (AH 1068–1070 / 1658–1660 CE) was short-lived, overshadowed by his rivalry with Aurangzeb, who ultimately defeated him. Forced into exile in Arakan (modern-day Myanmar), Shuja eventually met his end there. The coins from this turbulent period reflect the competing claims to the throne by Shuja, Murad Bakhsh, and Aurangzeb, offering valuable insight into the contested Mughal succession.
