This and other high-handed actions by the British caused simmering resentment among the natives, which broke out in a revolt by Indian troops in 1857, called the &quot;Sepoy Rebellion&quot;. They proclaimed their allegiance to the Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah II, and also returned Brijis Qadr, son of the former Nawab, to the throne of Awadh.
