This and other high-handed actions by the British caused simmering resentment among the natives, which broke out in a revolt by Indian troops in 1857, called the "Sepoy Rebellion". They proclaimed their allegiance to the Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah II, and also returned Brijis Qadr, son of the former Nawab, to the throne of Awadh. Brijis Qadr struck a few coins before being deposed in 1858. The Revolt collapsed the following year, but responsibility for governing India was taken from the BEIC, and turned over to the Crown.&nbsp;&nbsp;
