Chinapatan, the local name for Madras, was at first used as the name of the mint; however, this was later changed to Arkat, the name of a neighboring town, whose rupees were widely used, especially in Bengal. It was not until 1757 that the EIC acquired the right to mint coins in Bengal, despite its extensive trading interests there.
